Aveda's Green Backstage program asks all partnering designers to replace backstage water bottles with New York City tap water, eliminate fur from their collections, and use post-consumer recycled paper for invitations and programs. With Aveda's philosophy, it's no wonder John Patrick wanted to work with the brand for his ORGANIC by John Patrick Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week presentation.

"Our collection this season is based around water," John Patrick said. "I love that the hair look evokes the salty, windblown feel of hair that's dried after being in the ocean.  The style definitely has some 1970's, Charlie's Angels inspiration but the finished look is completely fresh."

Plus, skin experts from Mama Mio Skincare will serve mocktails and samples of Get Waisted Body Shaper, and a skincare specialist from Rilastil will be sampling their latest eye cream. Kiehl's Karaoke Karnival
Kiehl's flagship store (109 3rd Avenue) will throw a fabulous Fashion's Night Out party hosted by the president of Kiehl's himself, Chris Salgardo. In the spirit of a carnival, there will be cocktails, cotton candy, hot dogs and pretzels. Those brave enough to perform karaoke will score a complimentary lip balm, and there will be performances by Jordin Sparks, Adrienne Bailon and CariDee English.

Lea made best-dressed lists with her on-trend navy Oscar de la Renta, but what I loved most about her look was her parted bangs and soft, windblown waves - a true departure from the glossy barrel curls usually seen at awards shows. The contrast between Lea's effortless hair style and her glamorous gown and jewelry was spot-on.

While the Mad Men star's Atelier Versace gown received mixed reviews, for me the look was redeemed by her unconventional mussed hair, created by celeb stylist Mark Townsend. I loved the slightly longer length, and it was refreshing to see her without the perfectly-coiffed bob she wears on TV.

Rutina ditched her True Blood character's braids and opted for soft waves with a middle part for a simple, gorgeous look. She upped the glam factor with pink flushed cheeks and classic red lips - a total package of fall beauty inspiration.

If these looks are any indication, this season is the time to forgo hairspray and make room for dry shampoo and texturizing mist - right now, it's all about imperfect, tousled tresses.

Ever hear that old rule that says you shouldn’t match your eye makeup to your outfit? Well, fuggedaboutit. Miranda’s makeup was basically the same color as the dress she wore to ET’s Emmy party on Sunday, and it looked fabulous.

The day before your wedding is not the time to try a new beauty experiment. A chemical peel or spray tan gone wrong could spell disaster - we’ve heard the horror stories!

Brow shaping falls into the "proceed with caution" category. Your best bet is to get them done at least a week in advance. That way, if there is any mishap, you'll have time for some of the hairs to grow back.

The good news? A misshaped brow can easily be corrected with a quality pair of tweezers. I can't seem to master the false ones without looking like a Vegas showgirl, and the thought of using Latisse still makes me a little nervous. I hated chemistry in high school, but I’m newly obsessed with methyls, propyls, parabens and sulfates. This book is to blame.

No More Dirty Looks: The Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics is getting tons of press, and it’s easy to see why. Authors Sioban O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt uncover the scary facts about many of the products we slather on our skin, rub into our scalps and paint on our faces daily. From formaldehyde in hair straightening treatments to hormone disruptors in shampoo, the authors call out the most toxic ingredients you’ve probably never heard of - but may be using on your body all the time. I was surprised to learn beauty products aren’t regulated in the US - since they’re neither food nor drugs, the FDA doesn’t get involved (though the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, introduced to Congress last month, may change that).

As a person whose hairstyle requires no fewer than five leave-ins on any given day, news that my beloved potions could be doing me harm (and - eek! - actually making me look worse) wasn’t easy to take. But O’Connor and Spunt, themselves former product junkies, understand how hard old beauty habits are to break. With a non-preachy (yet no-nonsense) tone, they offer their favorite cleaner, greener alternatives and while advocating a sane and simple approach: learn your ingredients. If you’re not comfortable with aluminum in  your antiperspirant, switch it out. If you can’t live without your favorite red lipstick, controversial ingredient list or no, keep it - it won’t kill you. (Not everyone is convinced small doses of chemicals make a real health impact, including the Personal Care Products Council, the trade association that represents the industry.)

After spending the past two months living in Manhattan, I have come to the conclusion that summer is one of the best times to be here. In spite of the 90+ degree temperatures and dumbfounded tourists (who for some reason feel the need to take pictures of everything - the curb of the sidewalk just doesn't scream "prime photo-op" to me), summer in the city is an unmatched experience. One thing that contributes to New York's truly unique hot-weather vibe is the... olfactory aspect of it all.

For those of you who've never walked down the streets of NYC on a 96 degree day, I'll explain. When I first told my uncle (a native New Yorker) I would be living near Chinatown for the summer, his immediate response was that I should invest in a gas mask. Although he was joking, I quickly learned what he meant.

In New York, it seems like there's a new smell (or stench) to behold with each new breath. From the sweaty, unshowered man on the subway to the constant clouds of cigarette smoke, NYC certainly smells interesting. But not all smells are bad - there's also the scent of cupcakes baking at any one of the many bakeries, of the fresh flowers at the Union Square Greenmarket and of exotic spices as you pass an Indian restaurant.

Just when I've finally mastered the french braid and the hairline braid (which are basically the same thing), a new braid trend has emerged for fall: the fishtail braid. It first appeared on the runway at Doo.Ri during New York Fashion Week, and then on the red carpet on almost every celeb imaginable since! Diane Kruger, Leona Lewis, Mary-Kate Olsen and Vanessa Hudgens have all been spotted wearing variations of the fishtail braid.

I love the way the braid looks, especially when it's a bit undone and messy-looking. It seems like the perfect fall hair style because of its effortless-chic vibe and total versatility. The problem is, even though the style looks effortless when done well, it can be hard to master.

After checking out a few how-to descriptions and videos online, I attempted the braid for myself. I'm not going to lie, it was more difficult than I expected to get it looking right. But when I first attempted the hairline braid, it took lots of practice to get that right, too - and now it's my go-to quick hairstyle when my bangs just aren't looking right. I know how I'll be spending my next moment of free time or bout of boredom...

So you’ve said your “I dos,” tossed the bouquet and danced "The Electric Slide" with more enthusiasm than you'd like to remember. You don’t want all that to show on your face the next morning, do you? Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate is a miracle serum that will keep your skin soft and smooth when you wake up as “Mrs.”

The Gossip Girl obsession continues: to celebrate the release of the show's season three DVD, Nicole by OPI has created a line of nail polishes inspired by "the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite." The four uber-sparkly, on-trend colors are perfect for fall and back-to-school, even if you don't attend a posh Upper East Side private one.

The line includes "Party in the Penthouse," a deep, shimmering royal blue, "Too Rich For You," a dark teal with a hint of shimmer, "Nicole... Spotted!" a green sparkly shade and "Scandal, Secrets & Sparkle," a clear base with large silver glitter.

I viewed a New York Times slideshow documenting the process of scouting models just outside the high schools of Brazil. The idea that the country is a breeding ground for some of the world’s most beautiful people (read: Gisele) fascinates me. When I tried the Brazilian Peel by Advanced Home Actives, I didn’t think I’d magically transform into one of the stereotypical Brazilian bombshells, but I did have raised expectations.

The glycolic peel comes in a package with four weekly treatments set in syringe-like chambers containing the peel and the neutralizer. The peel activates when you dispense the solutions simultaneously in your hand. And you’ll definitely know it’s working… it begins to noticeably heat up (I was a little alarmed, but, don’t worry… it’s normal!).

I left the peel on my face for 10 minutes, at which point I could feel it tighten. A splash of cold water gave way to a brighter and fresher complexion. My skin felt the softest it’s ever been. The peel also promises to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, but, at 22, I can’t comment!

The process was simple, and the results really were astonishing. The treatment contains the antioxidant Acai, which is found in the Brazilian rainforest. I’m still not a Brazilian supermodel, but at least Advanced Home Actives has discovered a way to bring Brazil to us.

• If you have super-curly hair, use an old T-shirt to "towel"-dry when getting out of the shower, instead of an actual towel. The fibers in a towel can separate curls, creating frizz and flyaways. A T-shirt will absorb excess water without ruining your precious ringlets.

• Use water + an eyeliner brush + any powder eyeshadow to create a makeshift liquid liner. This is a great way to get more out of your eyeshadow and to convert your favorite shade to a multi-tasking makeup wonder!

• Curl your hair with a flat iron. If you have a 1- or 1.5-inch flat iron, you can use it to create loose waves without risking the dent that can result from a curling iron clamp. Separate 2-inch sections of hair, slide the flat iron down to mid-level (where you want the curl to start), and twist your wrist 180 degrees. Don't wrap the hair around the iron as you would with a curling iron - instead, keep your wrist in the twisted position and pull the hair section through the iron. Then repeat on the other sections of hair for a quick, va-va-voom wavy look!

• Don't brush your hair - seriously. Except when you're blow drying or styling hair, stick to a wide-tooth comb instead. Brushing can add frizz and static, and is harsher on your hair. Switch to a combing-only routine and you'll notice fewer split ends and an overall healthier mane.

• Use shimmery white eyeshadow as a luminizer and highlighter for your face. Apply just a little on your brow bone, in the corners of your eyes, and on cheekbones for a subtle, radiant glow.

• Lipgloss isn't just for lips! You can use your favorite semi-sheer lip color as a blush or as an eyeshadow, too. The key to this tip? Choose a moisturizing gloss that's not too sticky, and blend well with your fingertips.

I'm about to divulge a little secret that only my closest friends know: sometimes I go days without washing my hair. I've been struggling with my super thick, curly locks since I was a little kid (since the days my mom claimed not to have been able to get a comb through my unruly strands). But, I've been gifted with hair that - with a little effort - can be straightened. It usually takes 25 minutes of blow-drying followed by another 25 minutes of smoothing over with a straightening iron. After spending close to an hour trying to achieve stick straight hair, I tend to keep the style for as long as socially acceptable... sometimes up to four days.

That is, until Philip B. Katira Masque Universal Hair Revitalizer revamped my routine. It eliminates some time (and damage) spent heat-styling and straightens strands. The insider tip calls for a handful (!) of gel applied to damp hair. When it dries to a shell, brush it out of your hair. Then, blow it dry while simultaneously brushing it straight. Voila, straightened curls!

The idea of breaking my hair out of a hard shell scared me and made me sure that my hair would turn into a greasy, crunchy mess. I was so wrong - the masque left my hair surprisingly smooth. It turned out looking a bit more relaxed than my straight hair after 50 minutes of styling, and - I swear - it took half the time! I don’t know if the masque will get me to wash my hair more often... but it definitely will cut back on styling time when I do!

There's something about the scent of rose that makes me feel all feminine and girly, and this year's limited edition version of Sheer Stella by Stella McCartney is no acception. Every year Stella takes a spin on her iconic Stella scent by adding different notes, and this year's version was made using an entire organic rose harvest to create the Iranian organic rose note.

I can't say that I spritz it on and think it's smells extra natural or organic, but it definitely has a true rose-y aroma. Sometimes rose scents can remind you of your grandmother, but I promise, with the blend of top notes like green apple and frosted lemon mixed with heart notes like celestial rose and rose absolute with a base note of amber, this scent feels fresh and vibrant.

While there are many gorgeous incarnations of the Sheer Stella bottle from various years, this bottle is just as gorgeous. The design was created by London-based painter Philip Jones. It looks pretty on my dresser, which keeps me gravitating towards it when I'm getting ready for the day.

Living in New York City, my feet get used a lot. I walk everywhere, and in the summer that can mean dirty looking feet! No matter what sandals you wear, the city inevitably ends up on your soles.

From the first summer I lived here until now, it still continues to gross me out. I have never been much of a perfume girl. I had a Clinique Happy phase and even a slightly more exotic Hanae Mori Butterfly phase (and I still love both of those scents), but I always seem to get sick of a fragrance or forget to put it on.

In spite of my past relationship (or lack thereof) with perfume, I seem to have found my new signature scent - at least for this summer and upcoming fall.

Womanity, a new fragrance from Thierry Mugler, is fruity and exotic without being overpowering.  At first, I found it difficult to put my finger on exactly what notes make up the perfume. Billed as the "first sweet-savory fragrance," Womanity incorporates fig and caviar (seriously, caviar!) to create a unique scent.

Maybe my history with fragrance has impeded my ability to pick up on the subtleties of a scent, but I have a hard time picking up on the caviar note. To be honest, I think I'm glad that I'm not able to identify the fact that my perfume smells like fish eggs. I just know that it smells unlike any other fragrance I've worn before, in a good way.

The Womanity line includes a perfumed shower gel, body milk and body cream, in addition to the perfume itself. I fell in love with the body cream, which is ultra-rich and only subtly perfumed. The lighter body milk is great for summer because it absorbs quickly and leaves skin moisturized without feeling greasy.

Described by Thierry Mugler as "an artist's take on today's woman," Womanity seeks to promote female solidarity, strength and the connection between all women. Thierry Mugler has even created an online community- Womanity.com - to promote this pro-female outlook.

You've probably heard about the new "tanning tax" that puts a 10 percent excise tax on indoor tanning services, which went into effect on July 1. I have always loved the smell of sunscreen. The one-of-a-kind scent of suntan lotion transports me back to family vacations in Florida when I was a little kid and long afternoons spent on the beach. I have always been a devoted fan of Target. I wholeheartedly believe that it's the best discount store out there, and have actually found myself going through withdrawal now that I'm living in Manhattan (where there are - gasp! - no Target store locations). The store's recent collaborations with high-end makeup brands like Jemma Kidd and Boots have only added to my undying Target love.

There has been a break-in, an infiltration, if you will. Tarte Cosmetics has suddenly and inexplicably overtaken my makeup bag. After realizing that all of the lauded Tarte products that I've tested lately have surpassed my expectations, can you really blame me for letting more and more of them sneak into my daily routine?

Long before his mainstream peers were developing sulfate-free lines, or other salons began offering low or no ammonia options for hair dye, John Masters was a pioneer of natural hair care. I should have known that Suzy Gerstein was serious about beauty when I saw her traipse through my front door wielding a barely-fits-in-the-overhead-compartment size-wheeling suitcase. She sported enviable tapered cool-girl cargos, and a simple black tank, and I trusted her capability and style immediately. Then she zipped open said suitcase, revealing more products than can be found at your local Sephora and set up shop right at my kitchen table.

Some successful Google-stalking (guilty! But we really all do it, don't we?) revealed that Suzy is - as some of you may have read on this very site - a makeup artist to more than a few stars and for more than a few runways. She's beautified Leighton Meester, Erin Wasson, and Lou Dillon, and she's worked on the runways for Jill Stuart and Marc Jacobs.

Basically, she's a pro. I had a serious and very immature Oh-Em-Gee moment when I realized that the person who was evening out my skin tone had once done the same for the gorgeous Beyonce!

Since my dress is grey, black, and cream, I decided that a metallic smoky eye would offer the perfect edge to my sculptural and structured dress. Suzy agreed and got to work.

Spying into her makeup arsenal, I spotted quite a few products that we folks here at the Natural Blitz love - Amore Pacific Skincare and RMS Beauty for starters. And if I weren't already a fan of RMS, I was after the delicate balm was swiped over my lips.

To match the angular feel of the dress, Suzy decided to really play with the shape of the eye shadow, and she buffed and smudged a pretty metallic black until it extended at a sharp angle under my brow. Because I have such light skin, I never experiment with dark colored shadows fearing that I’ll look either goth or just extremely overtired, but Suzy pointed out that if black eye shadow is manipulated correctly the result can really compliment pink-based complexions. The rich dove gray shade that emerged on my lids proved her right!

The finishing touch on my face was an unexpected lightly flecked gold gloss. I had to rush out the door as soon as she was done - thank goodness I remembered to take the clips out of my hair - to make it to Lincoln Center on time, but the session with Suzy was undoubtedly worth it. I've never felt so red-carpet ready!

Spring. Along with the floaty dresses come sandals and peep-toes and...blisters. Big, evil ones that totally take that hop out of your step.

We've all been there, so you know bandaids are useless, and as with most uncomfortable factors in life, prevention is better than a cure. If you have an inkling your sandal strap is going to rub or the heel on your wedge is going to cause friction - be prepared.

Liquid eyeliner is making it's cat-like way back into fashion pages, which means it's time to start flexing those hand eye coordination skills.

The problem I've always had with liquid eyeliner is that it wears off in patches. Not wanting to look like my AT&T's statement's "tear across the dotted line" in the face of a strong continuous fashion trend, I consulted a Pakistani friend of mine, who is also an aspiring Bollywood actress - the experts at perfect liquid eyeliner.

Her tip to mimic Latika from Slumdog Millionaire's look rather than my phone bill's, was to apply a kohl pencil first. This works as a marker to follow, and base to cover you for any breakages throughout the day - and her final tip, use waterproof eyeliner. Avon's Mark Get In Line in Painted Black hit the spot!

You all might want to sit down for this. Through a course of events that I could never have anticipated, yours truly attended the CFDA Awards at Lincoln Center. For those of you who don't know, the CFDA Awards are a mini-Oscars for the fashion set. Of-the-moment designers are nominated for their outstanding collections and vision, and a council votes on the winners. I was so starstruck!

First up in the extraordinary process that was preparing to attend the CFDA Awards: nails.

I got my nails painted a vampy, burgundy red at the Jin Soon Natural Nail Salon. As soon as I walked in, I knew I was in good hands. The Upper East Side branch of Jin Soon - there are two others - is tucked away on 73rd street. It's an unassuming salon on a quiet block, and inside the vibe is calm and clean. I sipped on green tea and relaxed against soft cushions during my small wait time, and I admired the beautiful touches that make the spa feel as soothing as it does.

As usual, I toted my favorite color with me - Deborah Lippmann's Lady is a Tramp. All of the shades in the Lippmann Collection are 3 Free and contain natural nail strengtheners, which are fantastic for people with weaker nails like me. The ladies at Jin Soon were incredibly meticulous and they certainly know how to pay attention to detail, so when I explained that I was going out for an important evening, they promised that my nails and toes would be perfect.

I had been wearing the offbeat hue of the summer - vibrant green - on my toes, so removing all traces of emerald was pretty time intensive, but it was worth it when I watched the shiny cranberry color replace it. The treatment itself was luxurious. I was given a choice of five essential oils for fragrance, and when I chose grapefruit, the entire footbath was perfumed with a lovely citrus scent that made me feel instantly calmer.

After all, I was getting a little jittery about the night that lay ahead. After about 45 minutes for my simultaneous mani-pedi, during which my calluses were scrubbed, my cuticles eliminated, and legs moisturized, I zipped out of Jin Soon and headed across town for my hair appointment. It's possible Cleopatra not only kicked off the heavy-handed eyeliner trend, but also the practice of staining lips a bright red or pink color to give the mouth a fuller appearance, alerting a potential suitor to the pheromones being put out there, and hopefully having some sort of bewitching effect on the opposite sex.

Unlike a kohl pencil that has stood the test of time, the Egyptian lipstick prototype was made of crushed (smelly) carmine beetles, and has thankfully been replaced with less gagworthy materials - and possibly more bewitching. Introducing Urban Decay Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss, combining more color than any beetle could muster, with the punch of added pheromones.

Sounds like man magnet to me. The gloss has a hologram on the applicator that flashes between hot guy with clothes on, hot guy with clothes off - assumably giving a heads up on what to expect when using the product.

After a very very very windy night out in TriBeCa, giggling at the hologram at every reapplication, the only thing the gloss attracted was hair. Mine, and lots of it into my mouth. But, I am sure, on a different night, results could have been different, given the gloss smells AND tastes like a cinna-bun, how can that not be attractive? Happy to give it the benefit of the doubt.

If you use self tanners to get your tan, I applaud your good judgement (it's the only safe tan)! But if on occasion it turns out less than perfect, don't worry; it can easily be fixed.

Whether it's streaky, uneven or just too dark, daily exfoliation with a chemical exfoliant (glycolic is best) will do the trick. And if you already use a chemical exfoliant daily, then for a few days either consider using it twice a day or using a stronger strength once daily. However, don't use physical exfoliants (scrubs, microdermabraision), because they are more difficult to use evenly.

As skin cancers are reaching epidemic proportions, we may need to refocus our efforts in best protecting the health and appearance of our skin from the damaging effects of chronic sun exposure.

Over time, ultraviolet rays are well known to be the causal factor in premature aging, inflammatory skin conditions and skin cancers. Topical sunscreens protect the skin from ultraviolet rays by scattering or absorbing the rays before they can cause damage to the skin cells. However, as we forget to apply or reapply our sunscreens (or even miss certain areas), there may be an additional way for you to help protect the health of your skin.

A growing body of research concludes that certain antioxidants may further protect the skin from the permanent damage cause by sun exposure. On the top of list, green tea, cocoa, polyphenols from berries, cantaloupe, and tomatoes (particularly tomato paste as it is lycopene rich,) have shown in human clinical studies to help reduce the post inflammatory response cause by sun exposure and may help to protect the skin cells from permanent cellular damage.

So what does this mean? First of all, you should always apply a topical SPF on a daily basis but if you are seeking added protection for your skin, you may want to implement certain antioxidants into your diet and/or supplement with a antioxidant rich formulation to optimize skin protection both topically and internally!

The burden of bearing a strong pair of brows is they enjoy the company of their own kind. Like that nasty android at the end of Terminator 2, my eyebrows threaten to morph together, sometimes even with my hairline, to create a "superbrow" to be reckoned with.

Regular threading appointments are mandatory to keep the boundaries clear, and defined - I noticed that mine were in need of urgent attention. As the weather transitions to warmer sunnier days, you know you should put on some SPF even if you're not heading out for the beach. But how much do you need?

Using too much can be uncomfortable and "goopy," and did you know that not using enough can cut the delivered SPF by the square root of the stated SPF (e.g., an SFP 15 becomes a 4, an SPF 50 becomes a 7)?

It's simple: for traditional sunscreens use an amount equal to the size of a nickel, and for chem-free sunblocks, use an amount equal to a pea!

Acne is a complex skin condition characterized clogged pores and inflamed irritated skin (due to the overproduction of sebum). In regards to diet, most of us assume it is the fried fatty foods that do most harm in stimulating sebum production (thus contributing to acne or blemishes).

One of my favorite things about London is fancy dress. If you're not up on the terminology, it's a costume party where you dress in fun, fancy clothes – every girl's dream!

I've excitedly made grand entrances as Wonder Woman, an American Cow Girl, a Circus Knife Thrower and my favourite to date, Amy Winehouse (you should have seen my tatts!).
