There is a new Antioxidant in Town!
201002 Antioxidant Cantaloupe

We hear the debate around antioxidants and their perceived benefits to help protect us from accelerated aging and the onset of chronic disease. And with a plethora of research & expert opinions available, it can be confusing to best understand their truly unique health benefits.

Antioxidants are naturally derived ingredients found in diet and in nutraceutical based formulations that may help to protect our bodies from the damaging effects of free radicals, which we come in contact with from the natural process of aging to external insults such as pollution, smoking and sun exposure. As we age and are increasingly exposed to these stressors, antioxidants may become more important to help maintain optimal health and healthy aging.

There are many forms of antioxidants such as bioflavonoids (from citrus peel, peppers, cherries) or polyphenols (from berries, sweet potatoes, turmeric, dark chocolate, red wine). Once digested, these antioxidants are quickly utilized in the body and therefore must be continually replenished. This is why in conjunction with a healthy diet, an antioxidant supplement may be of benefit.

Most recently introduced to North America (from France), is a unique nutritional supplement that mimics a naturally occurring antioxidant enzyme system within our bodies. GliSODin (derived from cantaloupe) provides a concentrated source of SOD (superoxide dismutase).

SOD is produced in our bodies and functions as our very first defense to destroy free radicals. As mentioned above, when we age our immune systems may become compromised rendering us more susceptible to free radical damage. Even better, SOD has the ability to combat all forms of free radicals whereas other antioxidants only have the ability to neutralize certain types of free radicals.

So the next question is....Can you get too much of a good thing? Yes! In fact if you are considering supplementing with an antioxidant, you should discuss this with a qualified health professional who can best assess your biochemical individuality and health needs.

I say time and time again.....if you feel well, you will look well! And by incorporating antioxidant rich foods and/or supplementation you may best protect your natural beauty over the long term.
