Get the Look: Emma Watson's Not-Too-Matchy Lip Was Inspired by Pinterest

While other young actresses chose aging updos and fussy gowns for the Golden Globes, Emma Watson ruled the red carpet in fresh, modern makeup and a dress-over-pants ensemble that felt cool and casual. Into it. According to Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee, Emma already knew she wanted to wear a strong lip going into the night. “I actually discouraged the matching of the lip to the dress because I feel like that never really works, and is very predictable,” Lee said. “But we looked at makeup references on Pinterest for ideas and inspiration and mixed up a lip color that looked modern and fresh, but was also classically beautiful.”

    1. Skin Care

“I like to use the Chanel Hydra Beauty Serum to prep the skin. I use it on every single person I work with. It delivers a really intense dose of hydration but doesn't leave any residue behind. It's perfect for under makeup as a pre-base, too.”

    2. Foundation

“Emma has the most amazing skin and I really wanted to keep the integrity and quality visible, so I used Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup SPF 15 — just a tiny amount where I needed it — leaving the skin as clean as I could.”

    3. Highlighter

“On the cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose, and along the jawline I applied Illamasqua Gleam Cream in Aurora to bring a tiny bit of light and luminosity to the high points of her face.”

    4. Eyes

“I don't like the idea of using a highlighter and then using a shading color on eyes, so there's actually nothing on Emma's eyelids. A lot of times when you see a highlight in my work it's just concealer! I put a little bit of Chanel Éclat Lumière Highlighter Face Pen on Emma's lids and under her brow bone to black out that space and make it a clear negative, and then I used Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir on her lashes. I'm a big fan of thick and full lashes at awards ceremonies.”

    5. Brows

“Emma's eyebrows are on the next level of perfection, so I used Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel to hold them in shape and bring in a sense of uniformity.”

    6. Lips

“I mixed Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Exaltée and Coromandel and went straight from the lipstick to the lip with my brush, blending the color out, and blotted. I use oil blotting sheets when I blot because it lifts up the oils and the waxes, but it leaves behind the pigment so when you go back and add another coat it makes the color that much more intense. Then I put a layer of translucent powder on top and repeated the process; it's a long day for these guys.”
