	Baliage French hair coloring technique that involves finger-painting dye onto strands to produce natural-looking highlights.


	Beeswax Waxy substance produced by the honey bee to build its comb. It is used in lipstick, lip balm, and moisturizers.


	Bentonite White clay used to purify pores in masks.


	Benzoyl Peroxide Chemical used for treating acne. It is typically placed over the affected areas in gel or cream form.


	Bergamot Small and citrus fruit grown mainly in Calabria, Italy. Bergamot peel is often used in perfumery, aromatherapy and body creams.


	Beta Carotene Antioxidant (Vitamin A) found in carrots and leafy greens. When applied topically, it helps protect the skin from the effects of free radicals.


	BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) An antioxidant and preservative used to prevent oils from turning rancid.


	Biotin Known as vitamin H, this part of the vitamin B complex is found in all living cells. Biotin helps convert fats, proteins and carbohydrates into body fuel.


	Birch Bark Used by American Indians, it acts as a tonic, refreshes the skin and has anti-inflammatory qualities.


	Bismuth Citrate A metal salt used in hair dyes that are said to be safer than oxodative hair dyes. They gradually change hair color by reacting with sulfur in the hair. Oxidative hair dyes, by contrast, contain colored dye substances and hydrogen peroxide, which produce a chemical reaction inside each hair, can irritate your scalp and damage your hair.


	Boar Bristle A stiff, thorny hair commonly used in natural-bristle brushes. They are gentler on the scalp and hair than synthetic bristles but are much more expensive.


	Body Wrap Personal care product put on the skin, after which the body is wrapped in heat-retaining blankets. Such products contain natural ingredients such as coconut oil, mud, or seaweed and are used to soften the skin and draw out impurities


	Borage An emollient herb that has a cooling and soothing effect.


	Boric Acid An inorganic acid used as a mild antiseptic and preservative.


	Botanical Refers to an ingredient that is plant-derived.


	Botox Known as Botulinum Toxin. When used in tiny amounts, it can temporarily paralyze a muscle and reduce wrinkles and fine lines for up to six months.


	Brazilian Bikini Wax An extreme form of hair removal, involving complete stripping of hair from front to back on a woman’s bikini line, except for a thin strip of hair on the pubis.


	Broad Spectrum A sunscreen property indicating that a formula protects against a wide range of UVA and UVB rays.


	Bromelain An enzyme found in the pineapple plant. Bromelain digests dead cells on the surface of the skin and is used as a gentle exfoliant, instead of scrubs.


	Buffer A cleansing solution that is used to stabilize a product’s pH and lengthen the product’s shelf life. A buffer is also an extremely fine-grit manicure tool used to shine the surface of the nail.


	Burdock Extract A root extract with antibacterial properties. It helps reduce inflammation such as rashes, redness, acne, and eczema, and helps restore skin tone and smoothness. This extract also contains cleansing and astringent properties.


	Butylparaben An oil-soluble synthetic preservative found in beauty products.
