Maison Martin Margiela's New Scents Smell Strangely Familiar
Between a collaboration with H&M, outfitting Kanye West for his Yeezus tour and getting shout outs in Jay-Z’s rhymes, Maison Martin Margiela is one of the hottest fashion houses in the industry. But even for those of us who don’t have an occasion to wear a tattoo-covered couture gown, there are three new ways to wear Margiela: the latest additions to the house’s Replica fragrance collection.
The Replica theme began with a clothing collection. Every season since 1994, Maison Martin Margiela has created a line of ‘Replica’ pieces that reproduce timeless garments sourced from around the world; each new piece features a label that describes the provenance and period of the original item. (This season, for example, you can buy a pair of sneakers based on men’s sports shoes that were popular in Austria in the ‘70s.)
Launched in 2012, the Replica fragrance collection aims to replicate not a physical object, but the mood of a specific time and place as expressed through memory-evoking scent. The perfume collection debuted with three original and unique scents, Funfair Evening, Flower Market and Beach Walk. Now, three more scents have joined the party, including the first men’s fragrance in the line.
Lazy Sunday Morning
Think of the smell of fresh linen sheets on a Sunday morning in Florence – luminescence, the bright sunlight peeking through the window as the birds chirp. That was Givaudan perfumer-designer Louise Turner’s vision for Lazy Sunday Morning. “In the beginning, there was color: white — luminous, virginal, immaculate. That was my challenge: how to convey the sensations of a color in a scent.”
The fragrance is blended with heavy floral notes like lily of the valley and patchouli. The scent of fresh laundry is conveyed through white and creamy musk, giving you the feeling of never wanting to get out of bed.
Promenade in the Gardens
Another intoxicating floral scent, Promenade in the Gardens was inspired by English gardens and the feeling of being surrounded by floral notes. Says Carlos Benaim, Master Perfumer at IFF, “I was walking in a garden in Oxfordshire and was dazed by this idealized vision of nature. The calm waters of the lake, the bucolic lawns, groves and the fantastic aura of roses and jasmine. All my senses were captivated by this idyllic landscape.”
The heart of the fragrance is Turkish rose and woody patchouli mixed with sandalwood and vetiver. You even get a whiff of freshly-trimmed hedges that really makes you feel like you’re strolling through a royal garden in England.
The first male fragrance in the Replica collection brings us to a Brooklyn jazz club, where the whiskey is flowing and the scent of cigars fills the air. IFF perfumer Aliénor Massenet created a woody, oriental fragrance to illustrate this ambiance. Blended with notes of pink peppercorn, orange, sage, vanilla, tonka bean, vetiver and tobacco leaves, the scent depicts “an overall melody of leather and liquor.”
The Maison Martin Margiela Replica fragrance collection ($125 each) is now available at Sephora and MMM boutiques.
