An Ode to Chic Grandmas at Theyskens’ Theory - NYFW Fall 2012

Backstage at Olivier Theyskens’ latest collection for Theory, “it’s about a girl who goes to visit her grandmother,” explained makeup artist James Kaliardos for MAC. “She takes away really great classic pieces from her [grandmother’s] wardrobe and from her beauty closet.” This reference point led James to use an “old-fashioned” lip color - MAC Mattene Lipstick in Hazy Lilac - and coppery (not-yet-released) Pressed Pigment in Spot Lit on lids. Well-blended Matchmaster SPF 15 Foundation kept the look modern, not old school cakey, while nude lip color provided contour for cheeks. “My grandma inspires me all the time,” James said (rather adorably) backstage. “I think it’s great to take inspiration from the history of your family.”
On nails, Jin Soon Choi for CND used the brand’s Marshmallow Rose, a sheer lilac with a blue undertone that she chose to work with the lilac lip and because it felt more “sophisticated” than your typical sheer pink.
Finally, Odile Gilbert for Kérastase blow dried hair straight and employed hidden braids to “make the head thinner” - all the better for pairing with winter outerwear for a more streamlined, less bulky look. Mimicking winter static, Odile crafted a texture that was “a bit electric, so when the girls walk it’s flying.” She used a combination of Kérastase Mousse Substantive, Mousse Volumactive and Double Force Controle Ultime Extra Hold Hair Spray on models’ manes.
