A New Way to Wash Your Hair

By Wendy Rodewald-Sulz / March 17, 2015

Though the “no-poo” movement is a pretty big deal in some internet circles, I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to give up washing their hair with shampoo. Maybe it’s because I spend a significant chunk of my evenings getting sweaty while wearing a helmet, or because my fine, wavy-almost-curly hair looks so sad and limp after two days sans suds. Not to mention there’s literally no better feeling in the world than having clean, shiny, good-smelling hair.

For all those reasons, I tend to be apprehensive when it comes to messing with my usual lather-rinse-condition routine. But I think I’ve (gasp) found something better: the new Analog Cleansing Foam Conditioner ($29) from R+Co, the salon brand founded by superstylists Garren, Howard McClaren and Thom Priano. The formula is unlike any co-wash I’ve tried before. Instead of a typical conditioner, the aerosol can dispenses a creamy foam that’s more like an ultra-rich shaving cream. But rather than creating a lather (which can strip hair’s moisture), the foam nourishes the hair with argan oil, green tea, horsetail extract and nettle leaf extract.

After cleansing my hair with the foam and styling it as usual, I found I didn’t get those annoying frizzy pieces — the dreaded fuzz halo — around the roots of my hair. Instead of feeling dry on the ends, my waves were soft, shiny and much more manageable than they usually are when squeaky clean. It was definitely a good hair day. And my scalp didn’t get any greasier than usual, even after skipping a day between shampoos and going to the gym.

But if you don’t believe me, take a look at the perfectly imperfect hair Anna Sui’s models sported on the Fall 2015 runway. Garren and his team of hairstylists prepped each girl by cleansing her hair with the new product. “The genius of [Analog] is you can get that piece-y hair that you normally get after the second or third day,” he explained backstage. The hair, he says, “creates its own life.” I couldn’t have put it better.
