Finisher is the New Korean Skincare Step You Didn't Know You Needed
I’ve never fully understood the so-called 10-step (or is it 12?) skincare routine that women in Korea are said to follow. After cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer and sunscreen, what’s left to do? Even with access to a fully stocked office beauty closet, the limits of my imagination have stopped me at, like, six products, max.
But not for long. Just as BB cream filled a void we didn’t know existed a few years back, new skincare categories continue to migrate over from Asia. The latest complexion must-have is finisher, and Korean luxury brand Sulwhasoo has just debuted the first one ever for the U.S. market. The Luminature Essential Finisher ($90) is, as you can imagine, meant to be the last step in your skincare routine. According to its packaging, the product is “designed to seal in all benefits of previously applied products while creating a perfect canvas for makeup application.” Its active ingredient is a complex of ginseng and green tea that packs as much antioxidant power as 110 cups of the stuff.
When I tested the finisher (after cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturizing, of course), it seemed to make my foundation stick better on my skin — no sliding around on my product-saturated cheeks. It also has a pretty luminosity that gives skin the subtlest sheen. That said, I’m not sure I’ll ever be a convert to a dozen-step skincare odyssey every morning. For one, I’d rather squeeze in a few extra minutes of beauty sleep, A.K.A. the best skincare product there is. And after all, isn’t multitasking what BB cream is for?
