Match Your Lipstick to Your Doc Martens

A red lip can take many different forms, depending on its shade. A sheer, juicy cherry is romantic and youthful; a scarlet shade with a vinyl shine reads siren sexy. But if what you’re going for is on the “utilitarian modern punk” spectrum, the lip that models sported at Monday's 3.1 Phillip Lim show should be your look of choice.

“I’m obsessed with this shade of oxblood red,” said makeup artist Francelle Daly for Nars, who created the Fall 2015 look to reference a pair of leather boots she wore in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Nars’ new-for-fall VIP Red Lipstick happened to be a dead ringer for the color, which was totally the Doc Martens hue favored by that era’s cool girls. As for the lipstick, “It looks good on everybody, all the girls with different skin tones,” Daly told us backstage. (The shade won't be available until next fall, but in the meantime, the Mysterious Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is a good match.)

Also key to the look? The “raw, radiant” skin, which Daly used to play off the polish of the more refined lip. She evened out models’ complexions with Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (“it emulates the real, natural look of skin”) and used the brand’s fall 2015 Tribulation Blush to highlight the high planes of the face (cheekbones, nose, chin). The brows were brushed up but left otherwise bare to complete the undone feel. Because that girl in the boots? She just doesn’t have the time for a full face.
