The 10 Big Beauty Trends You Need to Know from Fashion Week Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
Fashion Week is winding down in New York, and after a week’s worth of shows and probably a couple cubic tons of hairspray, some notable patterns have emerged. Hair length is rising faster than hemlines; eyeliner is migrating to places we’ve never thought to wear it; nail art is growing up more quickly than the Fanning sisters wearing Rodarte. Ready to get ahead of the next big thing? Let these trends be your takeaway from the season. This is the future of beauty.

Short Cuts Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
In recent seasons, stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron have made pairing fuss-free short hair with red carpet gowns a thing. Oscar de la Renta’s choppy wigs, styled by Orlando Pita, are proof that the trend toward cropped ‘dos isn’t going anywhere.Photo by: Getty Images -
Glitter Bomb Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
Glitter is going to be everywhere come fall — on lips, lids and as a result, probably all over your hands, clothes and furniture, too (hey, it comes with the territory). At Rodarte’s Star Wars-themed show, James Kaliardos for Nars mixed loose glitter with brown-berry Deborah Audacious Lipstick (new for Fall 2014) to create dazzling dark pouts. Altuzarra’s girls wore glitter on their eyelids, as did models at Lela Rose, while Badgley Mischka’s show featured glitzy sparkle manis.Photo by: Nars -
Nail Art is Dead. Long Live Nail Art Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
While sequins and effects topcoats have gone the way of the dodo, simple, graphic shapes kept runway manicures interesting this season. Expect to see more designs painted onto a naked nail, like this look from Opening Ceremony by Naomi Yasuda for Essie.Photo by: Essie -
Bun Heads Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
The chignon is back — and bigger than ever at Carolina Herrera, where Orlando Pita used spongy foam inserts to create mega-sized buns. Jason Wu, Christian Siriano and Altuzarra all featured new twists on the classic hairstyle.Photo by: Getty Images -
Boy Brows Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
Cara Delevingne may not have walked in New York, but her signature feature continues to be in demand. At Jason Wu, makeup artist Diane Kendal for Lancôme made boyish brows her focal point, enhancing arches with the brand’s Le Crayon Poudre and Modèle Sourcils Brow Groomer. This macro trend toward fuller frames is here to stay — and just might put your local threading salon out of business.Photo by: Kérastase -
Black Cats Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
This season’s cat eye liner has gone to the dark side: thick, punky and ultra black. At Rag & Bone, Gucci Westman was inspired by ‘60s French Yé Yé singers and their signature look. She perfected models’ wings by layering liquid liner over Revlon ColorStay Crème Gel Liner for a precise, graphic line. Black liner got a similarly supersized treatment at Cushnie et Ochs, BCBG and Christian Siriano.Photo by: Revlon -
Olympic Metals Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
The athletes in Sochi aren’t the only ones chasing gold, silver and bronze. Metallics made a back-to-back-to-back appearances on both eyes and nails. Our favorite take: Charlotte Tilbury’s silver shadow at Donna Karan. The makeup artist used charcoal gray MAC Phone Number Eye Kohl to create definition and Pro Platinum Pigment for serious shine. Meanwhile, models at Naeem Khan sported gilded lids, and girls at Peter Pilotto for Target rocked bronze. -
Under Lines Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
Liner headed south at shows like Creatures of the Wind and Rachel Comey. After years of being taught to avoid lowers-only makeup lest it drag down the eye, breaking this old beauty rule feels rebellious and new (can your average smoky eye do that?). At Thakoon, Diane Kendal for Nars used the brands Mambo Eyeliner Pencil and a chocolate shadow from the Dolomites Duo Eyeshadow (new for Fall 2014) to emphasize “natural beauty with an odd artsy twist.” We think it looks gorgeously sultry. Bottoms up.Photo by: Nars -
Straight and Narrow Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
If Elizabeth Olsen’s new Miu Miu ad hasn’t already convinced you to fire up your flat iron (and perhaps pop some Viviscal), the sleek, center-parted manes at Prabal Gurung and Suno surely will. Odile Gilbert for Kérastase crafted Suno’s “hippie chic” style by blowing out hair with a paddle brush, then flat ironing while applying the brand’s Elixir Ultime for shine and softness. Beachy hair, you’ve met your match.Photo by: Kérastase -
Individuality Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
One of our favorite shows this week was DKNY, which cast an army of real, cool people and offbeat models (with a few of the transgendered and/or technicolor haired variety), then let them walk the runway looking like...well, themselves. It made for a refreshing time-out from the standard clone parades that are most fashion shows, and it’s a trend that we hope continues at the European shows and for next season. There’s nothing more beautiful than being yourself, right?Photo by: Wella Professionals
