Seriously? Teens in California Are Getting Drunk Off Hand Sanitizer
By Wendy Rodewald-Sulz / April 24, 2012
Today the LA Times reports on a "troubling trend": six teenagers in California have been treated for alcohol poisoning recently after drinking liquid hand sanitizer.
Unlike the recent "bath salts" drug panic, "hand sanitizer" isn't a street name - the kids are actually sipping Purell. Hand sanitizer is 62 percent ethyl alcohol and can be made into 120 proof liquor through a distillation process using salt (instructions are, naturally, on the internet).
