This New Skincare Bar Takes the Facial Out of the Spa

By Wendy Rodewald-Sulz / June 1, 2015

Between the soothing soundtrack, mood lighting and cucumber water, spas are the type of place where we could spend an entire day…except, who actually has that much time to hang out in a plush robe? Not many of us do, and the rise of on-demand beauty service apps and blowout bars is a testament to that fact. We want our services to be quick, and easy to slot into our packed calendars.
Heyday, NYC’s newest beauty bar, is all about making skin maintenance simple by taking the facial out of the spa. The modern, navy-and-cream space in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood is a stylish alternative to the typical dimly lit spa facility, but the facials are just as on-point. They’ve kept the best parts of the experience – you get a true 30- or 50-minute facial treatment suited to your skin type — but dispensed with all the aspects that make getting a facial at a traditional place inconvenient. You can book online or via Heyday’s app, and the shop is open from 7AM to 10PM on weekdays (9AM to 8PM on weekends), so there are plenty of appointments available before and after work hours. And there’s no confusing spa menu that forces you to choose between a “purifying” or “soothing” or some other adjective-heavy treatment — your esthetician assesses your skin to figure out exactly what it needs, and what it doesn’t.

When I dropped by to try the 30-minute treatment ($60) last week, my skin was in the midst of recovering from an earlier freakout brought on by some combination of testing new products, under-moisturizing and over-drying. My facialist started by gently cleansing my skin (she let me keep my eye makeup intact, which I was grateful for in the middle of the day) and taking a look at my complexion using a blacklight contraption that was like a CSI tool for clogged pores and dryness. She followed with a facial massage and a series of masks that exfoliated, quenched and soothed my aggravated skin and helped reduce the redness on my cheeks. The 50-minute treatment ($95) adds extractions into the mix, and there’s also a menu of $30 add-ons that includes microdermabrasion, peels, light therapy, and even a beard treatment for men.
But the best part is Heyday’s well-curated selection of skincare products, which features the best offerings from a range of boutique brands like Naturopathica, Rodin Olio Lusso and Grown Alchemist, among tons of others. Each of the products used in the signature facials and offered for sale (both in store and online) has been vetted by the company’s team of skincare experts, and many are made with all-natural ingredients. Basically, this is your one-stop shop for great skin.
