This Jem and the Holograms-Inspired Photo Shoot Will Change Your View of ‘80s Makeup
By Wendy Rodewald-Sulz / June 9, 2014
If you, too grew up watching the ‘80s cartoon Jem and the Holograms — about a pink-haired singer and her all-girl band — then you might have similar reservations about the live-action Hollywood adaptation that just wrapped filming and is set for release in 2016. But if the movie looks as good as this photo shoot, then ‘80s kids are in for a treat.
For “V and the Holograms,” an editorial in V magazine, photographer Manolo Campion captured model Sonya Gorelova styled in ‘80s-inspired sequins fit for a rock goddess. The multicolored wigs, styled by Jordan M. (Susan Price) are a twist on the cartoon characters’ colored hair as seen through the pastel-hued glasses of the Pinterest era. And the makeup by Cedric Jolivet (See Management) makes ’80s clichés like bright stripy contour blush and eye shadow up to the brow bone look surprisingly modern. It’s enough to make us want to pick up a hot pink guitar. See the full shoot here.
