Get the Look: Kate Upton’s Elegant Chignon

Her breakout moment may have been as a Sports Illustrated cover girl, but Kate Upton looked like a true movie star at the LA premiere of her first film, The Other Woman. Was it the beaded Dolce & Gabbana minidress and Chanel diamond earrings? Partially, but we think her elegant updo by hairstylist Peter Butler had something to do with it, too. We love the volume in the front and simple donut chignon in the back, a look that’s perfect for wedding season and oh-so-easy. “She looked incredibly elegant and polished tonight,” said Butler, who gave us the full scoop on how to get her look.

    Mousse

Butler began by applying three dollops of Leonor Greyl Paris ‘Au Lotus’ Volumizing Mousse to Upton’s damp hair – one on top, one split between the sides and one in the back – and running it through from root to tip. Then, he blew out the hair using a paddle brush to create volume.

    Hairspray

During the blow out, Butler spritzed on Leonor Grey’s Spray Structure Naturelle Hair Spray by section to add volume, strength and lift to the root.

    Styling Cream

Each section of hair received a dab of Leonor Greyl Éclat Naturel Styling Cream before being curled with a large-barrel wand. “The Éclat Naturel gave the hair a bit more texture, an almost wet look, and nice separation for when I combed it out,” Butler said. “This was really the key product to her look as it created that nice sleek, wet look we wanted.” Butler also used a smaller barrel iron to add shape to the front of Upton’s hair.

    Hair Elastic

Once all of the hair was curled, Butler pulled it back into a ponytail using an elastic band with hooks. “This really keeps the ponytail in place so the hair doesn’t slide and get loose afterwards.” He then wrapped the pony around the base to create a donut-shaped chignon, using four hair pins to secure it.
