Katie Holmes’ Swept-Back Style Will Convince You to Stop Hiding Behind Your Hair

It takes a certain confidence — with your forehead, namely — to sweep all of your hair off your face. My front layer is constantly rendering me half-blind as it covers one eye, and I like it that way. But long hair that cascades down your back while letting your face shape go full-frontal is a total babe look with a nod to the ‘90s (think Kelly Bundy, but with less Aqua Net). Last night, Katie Holmes pulled off a soft version of the style that’s way easier to wear than the harsher, gelled-back, runway-inspired equivalent. And it’s totally worth a try, even if you’re a chronic hair hider like me.
For the New York premiere of her new film with Helen Mirren, Woman in Gold, Holmes paired her hot pink Zac Posen two-piece with a look styled by hair maestro DJ Quintero — who naturally used Alterna products, as Katie is the face of the brand. To create her look, prep damp hair with Alterna Haircare Bamboo Volume Weightless Whipped Mousse, and blow dry using a round brush to direct the hair straight up and back away from the face. Flat iron the tips of the hair, leaving volume at the top, and add texture by combing Alterna Haircare Bamboo Volume 2-in-1 Volumizer using your fingers. Finish with shine spray to polish it all off.
Another trick to try: set the style’s shape with no-crease clips, as see on Quintero’s Instagram. So pro!
