The Met Gala’s Most Unexpected Beauty Trends Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
We had a feeling the red carpet at Monday’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” Met Gala would be a sea of cat eye liner and red lips, but there were also less obvious beauty trends that made a mark at the annual affair. From statement-making wigs to blue used as eye shadow, here are a few of our favorite out-of-the-box beauty looks.

Floral Arrangements Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
Sorry, Sarah Jessica Parker, but the evening’s most stylish headgear was of the botanical variety. Georgia May Jagger and Diane Kruger each accessorized their flawless waves with a spray of blooms. Selena Gomez went even bolder: hair stylist Renato Campora topped off her look with a headpiece made of cascading white cymbidium orchids. He used Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to secure the “modern China doll” style.KeywordsMet Gala 2015 -
Statement Fringe Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
A few starlets showed up with bangs that paid homage to Chinese American actress Anna May Wong. Katie Holmes donned a blunt-cut wig to complement her Zac Posen dress (hair stylist DJ Quintero kept flyaways at bay using Alterna Haircare Caviar CC Cream), while Adriana Lima paired her fringe with vampy makeup and cascading waves. Meanwhile, stylist Mara Roszak used a fishnet veil and L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Clean Style Gel to keep Lily Collins’ piece-y bangs in check.KeywordsMet Gala 2015 -
Top Notch Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
It had a bit of a lull, but the top knot is still relevant, if beauties like Jennifer Lawrence and Alicia Keys have anything to say about it (we happen to think Keys’ side-shaved version looked extra cool). And Beyoncé unfurled her hair into what might be the topknot 2.0: the genie ponytail.KeywordsMet Gala 2015 -
Seeing Red Wendy Rodewald-Sulz
It’s no surprise that the color red — considered lucky in Chinese culture — was a major theme, but its most intriguing appearance was in an unexpected place: on the lids. On Jennifer Lopez, makeup artist Mary Phillips blended three shades of Lancôme Limited Edition Blush Subtil Crème — Coral Alize, Brise Rosee, and Rouge Mistral — with L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour in Classic Wine to create a balm which she patted along the temples, tops of the cheekbones and into the eyelids. Rihanna wore blush on her lids, too — makeup artist Mylah Morales blended Diorblush Vibrant Color Powder Blush in Mimi Bronze into the crease of her eyes to add dimension to her pink eye shadow. Meanwhile, makeup artist Melanie Inglessis used Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in #8 Red and #9 Coral to give Imogen Poots a red-rimmed smoky eye.KeywordsMet Gala 2015
