Hollywood's most glamorous night out also happens to be the best red carpet for spotting the next big beauty trends bound to blow up. So which statement looks had the most impact at this year's Oscars? Take a spin through these photos to see our hands down favorites — plus a few that missed the mark (sorry, stars, you can't win 'em all).

At this point, we’ve seen Julia Roberts pull off pretty much every hair color found in nature, and we liked her new, sunnier hue (styled in a loose updo by Serge Normant). Meanwhile, Jennifer Garner’s new caramel-colored highlights made her look at least five years younger.

Grown Out Cuts Beauty Blitz
On Charlize Theron, last year’s crop became this year’s slick bob. Now that’s what we call a sequel. On the other hand, Jennifer Lawrence’s grown-out pixie style felt way too mature for the 23-year-old nominee.

Margot Robbie’s deep berry lip color worked perfectly with her new brunette (!) hair. Kerry Washington’s plum shade was a cool complement to her purple gown.

The Academy wasn’t the only one to honor presenter and Hitchcock blonde Kim Novak. “This is sort of a Vertigo homage,” Amy Adams said of her classic French twist, styled by Renato Campora using a generous helping of Kérastase Forme Fatale. But it was Olivia Wilde who really wowed us, with a flawless cat eye (makeup artist Melanie Inglessis used Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner in Blackest Black) and ‘60s-inspired updo. So, so good.

Bravo to Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o, who has managed to wear her cropped hair a different way for every single red carpet appearance this award season. This style, created by hairstylist Larry Sims, featured a diamond Fred Leighton accessory that made us want to reach for a headband. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway is sticking with the haircut that won her the Best Actress award last year. We approve.

Monochrome Beauty Blitz
From her blonde hair to her nude makeup to her flesh-colored gown, Cate Blanchett stayed more neutral than Switzerland, while Kristin Chenoweth was gilded from head to toe. How about a pop of lip color next time, ladies?

Casual Hair Beauty Blitz
Dress code-defying hair has a way of instantly upping the cool factor on a formal gown. Need proof? Witness Naomi Watts’ effortlessly flipped style, or Emma Watson’s piece-y ponytail. But it was Jared Leto’s slept-on waves that took the cake. Hair stylist Chase Kusero prepped the Best Supporting Actor’s hair using the Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Collection the night before, then revived the style with ColorFinity Dry Shampoo on Oscar night for a true second-day look.

Last red carpet season’s hairstyle of the moment isn’t going anywhere. Kate Hudson’s “Veronica Lake meets Jerry Hall” look, styled by Living Proof Celebrity Hairstylist Chris McMillan, was one of our favorites. Sandra Bullock’s glossy curls were a glamorous departure from her usual sleek, flat-ironed styles.

Both Angelina Jolie and Penelope Cruz were pretty in pink pouts. All the better to let the eyes do the talking, right?
