When looking at photos of Rosamund Pike on the SAG awards red carpet, it looks like her makeup artist used about seven products max. Her pretty daytime smoky could have been created with a single eyeshadow palette, while her poppy lip seemed like a swipe of a single pretty lipstick. But, to our surprise, it actually took a village of skincare and makeup products to get the Gone Girl star ready for the red carpet. Here, makeup artist Melanie Inglessis gives us a breakdown of everything she used and how she used it.
Pike’s look is proof that a flawless makeup application starts with skincare. Inglessis' ritual is as thorough as our nighttime skincare regimens, yet Pike’s face looks nothing like the glazed complexion we go to bed with. She gave her a full blown facial for the perfect – not oily – canvas for makeup. Here’s the scoop.
Skincare
“I applied Sisley’s Sisleya Essential Lotion (available in March) all over the face, it is a toner and it is the first step to my skincare ritual,” says Inglessis. “I followed with a gentle spray of Sisley Floral Mist, it is refreshing and invigorating. I applied a thick layer of the eye contour mask and left it on for 10 minutes, while it reduces any under eye puffiness and helps brighten the area."
"Next is my little ritual. I am totally in love with Sisley Black Rose Precious Face Oil. I used a couple of drops mixed with Sisley Hydra Global. I find by combining those two, the skin is hydrated, nourished and feels silky but not oily! I finished the skin preparation with a thick layer of Sisley Nutritive Lip Balm, which I will leave on the lips until I am ready to apply lipstick.”
Complexion
Once the skincare sunk in, Inglessis began working on the face, starting with Make Up for Ever’s new Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer. Then, she spritzed Sisley’s Floral Mist on a Beautyblender sponge to distribute Make Up For Ever HD Foundation on the face using a feathering technique. Inglessis set the foundation with Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Multi-Colour with Make Up For Ever Microfinish Powder in Medium so it wouldn’t look too powdery.
To reduce the look of dark circles, Inglessis relies on a peachy concealer: Sisley Phyto Cernes Eclat #2. “The metal tip makes for a cooling and decongesting application,” she says. She finished it all off with Chanel Bronze Universal to contour, and Make Up For Ever HD Blush in Peachy Pink for a soft color on the apples of Pike’s cheeks.
Eyes
Pike’s pretty eye look was all about light-catching shadows and a soft wash of color. Inglessis used a pencil (Make Up For Ever Aqua Matic Eyeshadow Pencil in Metallic Golden Taupe) to softly smudge an all over wash of color from the crease to the top and bottom lash lines.
She then defined the crease with the darker hue in Chanel’s Quadra Eyeshadow in Prelude. “Using the lighter color of the combo, I highlighted the brow bone and the inner corner of the eyes, for a subtle light catching and to open the eye,” she added.
As for mascara, Inglessis used not one, but two different tubes to create the look. “I curled the lashes then applied Chanel’s Inimitable Mascara in brown on the bottom,” she says. “For the top lashes, one of my favorite mascaras is Make Up for Ever Smoky Lash in Black. I make sure I go really close to the lash base to cover all those fair lashes and create a deeper look.”
Lips
Finally, it was time for the focal point of the look: the lip. “I really wanted a pop, fun lip!” she says. “I always fill the lip with a pencil first, it gives me a stronger base color to apply the lipstick over it. I definitely wanted it matte, as I feel it’s a more current trend and easier to carry for hours on the red carpet.” Inglessis used Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil in 25C Orange Red and Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Pétillante.
Red carpet beauty is no joke, and thanks to Inglessis, we now know that getting ready for a big awards show takes a full day of prep. According to her, the skincare and makeup application took a total of an hour and 15 minutes to create. To sum it up, Inglessis used five skincare products, eight face products, five eye products and two lippies – a whopping total of 20 skincare and makeup products on Rosamund Pike. We can only imagine how many products she would have used if she decided to do a bold eye look instead.
