In Treatment: Shu Uemura Hair Ceremony at John Barrett Salon
We all have rituals when it comes to our hair, but probably none as exquisite as Shu Uemura’s Hair Ceremonies. The treatments, meant to evoke the precisely choreographed Japanese tea ceremony, have been available at U.S. salons for a couple years. But now New Yorkers have a dedicated place to indulge: John Barrett Salon has recently created a special Shu Uemura Sanctuary, one of only three in the country. Think of it as a refuge for endangered hair.
The soothingly lit, chiffon-draped sanctuary is manned by Chloe McMahon, who has the distinction of being the only dedicated Salon Ceremonist in the States. And she’s a true master of ceremonies, I learned when I dropped by for a Luxe Ceremony ($150) that left my hair in the softest, shiniest condition I’ve seen in months. After a deep cleansing eucalyptus oil scalp treatment, Shiatsu scalp massage, Cleansing Oil Shampoo and customized hydrating masque for my dried out mid-lengths and ends, I was a believer; the blowout with Essence Absolue (Chloe calls it “hair crack,” it's so good) was icing on the cake. And since John Barrett salon sits atop Bergdorf Goodman, on the 9th floor, the treatments make the perfect holiday shopping pit stop, of course. Shu Uemura Hair Ceremonies, $50-$150, are available at John Barrett Salon, NYC, 212-872-2700.
