What's In My Bag: The Skincare Guru

Twelve tubes of lipstick? Poetry scribbled on Sephora receipts? Keys to a Harley? You can tell a lot about a person by the contents of her bag. In our What’s in My Bag series, we ask style insiders to spill the contents of their purses in hopes of finding a few gems.

The Subject

Joanna Vargas is a New York City-based facialist to the stars and founder of her own namesake skincare line (a favorite among fashion peeps and editors). Vargas has a loyal celebrity following, including Naomi Watts, Julianne Moore and Rachel Weisz, and has even made models’ skin glow backstage at Fashion Week. If you were to just get one facial in NYC, it should be her signature Triple Crown Facial. Seriously, it’s that good.

The Bag

“I normally carry too many things around with me at any given time, so I need to carry something versatile. This season I'm carrying the Givenchy Pepe Messenger bag [1]. It's great because I can even carry around things for my daughter in the bag when I'm with her.”

What’s Inside

[2] “Beauty wise, I don't go anywhere without my Tarte inner rim brightener. It's great for giving the eyes a nice pick me up when I need to go out after work or if I have been up too late the night before.”

[3] “My Eyeko carbon black liquid eyeliner is great for everyday but I can also use it a bit heavier for going out. I love how fine the tip is.”

[4] “I use the Bite Beauty lip primer under all my lip colors but this fall I am combining their Rhubarb [5] and Honey Berry [6] Pigment Pencils for everyday. I'm obsessed. The color goes with everything and isn't too much for day.”

[7] “I always keep a Jennifer Fisher jewelry pouch in my bag with a few of her bracelets [8-10]. I can't wear them while I'm doing facials, but I love wearing them everywhere I go. I tend to keep a few in my bag in case I've left the house in a hurry and have forgotten to pack evening jewelry. Her stuff always makes you feel dressed up.”

The Quirky & Unexpected

[11-12] “I always keep a sketchbook and colored pencils in my bag at all times. I love drawing and jotting down my thoughts. It's also handy when I'm hanging out with my kids because everyone can take turns drawing things. I like having a little journal of their creativity and it will be fun to look back on that mix of their thoughts and my thoughts when they are bigger.”

[13-14] “I have a macaron coin purse from my daughter and I have a Lego Wonder Woman key chain that my son got me one year as a Christmas gift.”
